I use Alexa for my Smart Home devices. I love Alexa. However, sometimes I just can’t remember the exact name I gave to some devices, such as lights. Especially lights that I rarely control with voice commands. It didn’t take me long to realize that I could give multiple names to lights so that Alexa knows which ones I’m trying to control.

Group them up!

If you’ve used Alexa much, you know that you can only give one name to each device so, how do I do it? By using groups! You can put the same device into multiple groups and simply name the group however you like. Alexa can turn groups on and off the same way that individual devices are controlled.

For example, I have an Echo Flex with a light attachment in my hallway. I have it named ‘Hall nightlight’. However, I would try to control it with such names as ‘Hallway nightlight’ and ‘Hall light’. Of course Alexa didn’t know what I was talking about but, would sometimes give me suggestions on what it might be.

So, I created two new groups within the Alexa app. I named one ‘Hallway nightlight’ and the other ‘Hallway light’. The only device in these groups are my Echo Flex light. Now, Alexa can control the light using any of those three names.
